Informing the Flock- In the Rhythm of Christ

World Communion Sunday — October 5, 2025

For the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), World Communion Sunday is a celebration of Christian unity and oneness in Christ, observed on the first Sunday in October, to remember that believers worldwide are connected through the sacrament of communion, or the Lord’s Supper (essentially what God did for us through the Son, Jesus Christ). It’s a day for churches of various traditions to share the sacrament, acknowledge their common faith, and often to support global peacemaking ministries through the Peace and Global Witness Offering.

Key Meanings and Purpose

Oneness in Christ:

World Communion Sunday emphasizes that the shared act of receiving the bread and cup unites Christians across different cultures, languages, and denominations.

A Global Table:

The sacrament of communion is seen as a universal practice, a single table shared by all believers on earth and in heaven.

A Gift from the PC(USA):

The celebration began within the Presbyterian Church in 1936 and was later promoted to other denominations, becoming a worldwide observance of Christian unity.

Witness to Peace and Justice:

The day is also linked to the Peace & Global Witness Offering, a financial gift that supports ministries addressing issues of conflict, injustice, and the promotion of peace and compassion globally.

The idea to focus this particular Sunday on worldwide communion was first conceived by Presbyterian minister Dr. Hugh Thompson Kerr in the 1930s to encourage unity and cooperation among Christians.

After being adopted by the Presbyterian Church, the celebration was promoted worldwide by organizations like the National Council of Churches. Today, it is observed by churches worldwide through a variety of unique Christian traditions and liturgies.

We will have some very special and unique additions to the liturgy of our worship on that Sunday (10/5/25). We might hear a song in French or Zulu, or we might hear a scripture chanted in Spanish. We just never know how God might speak to us in a new or different language, one that might help us deepen our communion with God and others.
